Faith’s Greatest Enemies (Book Review)

The Lord, speaking through the Prophet Hosea, said: My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge . . . .

It turns out that one of the four major enemies Apostle Frederick K.C. Price cites in his book, Faith’s Greatest Enemies, is lack of knowledge. But let’s face it, many Christians, if not most, don’t have great knowledge of either the Bible or the importance of faith.

However, Satan knows their importance, which is why he expends so much energy trying to separate Christians from whatever knowledge or faith they may have.

“Satan is not interested in us,” Apostle Price writes in the introduction. “He is interested only in our faith.  If he can separate us from our faith, he can defeat us. If we can keep our faith intact, we will defeat him.”

Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Well, it is. And it isn’t.

Apostle Price quotes Romans 1:17, which says:

For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

What, then, is faith? Clearly, it doesn’t refer to a denomination. It doesn’t refer to being a Methodist, a Baptist, a Catholic, a Presbyterian, a Puritan or any other denomination.

Says the Apostle: “Faith is a way of life. It is not a spare tire.  It is not a magic wand.  It is not an Aladdin’s lamp.  It is a lifestyle. . . .  It is the life of God manifested in your life.”

In various works he has defined faith as acting on what you believe, or acting on the Word of God.

So he identifies Enemy No. 1 as Ignorance of God’s Word.

He writes: “If God is the One talking about His people, and He says, My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge, it is obvious that the knowledge God is talking about is knowledge about Him, knowledge about His Word, His way, and His will.”

“Your faith can never be strong if you are ignorant of the Word of God.  That means if you want your faith to be strong, you will have to do some studying, and become knowledgeable about the Word.”

Apostle Price offers a bit of his own testimony in the first chapter:

“Before I came into the knowledge of the things of God, I used to hear and believe many things simply because my church believed them.  Our denominations believed it. The denomination was there before I arrived, so I figured the denomination was right.

“We used to make fun of people who spoke with tongues, the people who called themselves ‘holiness people.’”  The minister made fun of them, and I went right along with it.  I figured my minister was right.  After all, he was my pastor, so he had to be right.  I mean, all preachers are right, are they not?   We just laughed them to scorn – all because we were ignorant.”

“We never prayed the prayer of faith in the churches I used to be in. We used to pray, ‘Lord, if it be Thy will . . . .’  That is a prayer of doubt when it is used in that context.  If you knew what the will of God was, why would you say ‘if’? If is an indication of doubt, is it not?  That is why most of the people we prayed for died.”

Enemy No. 2 is: Not Acting Like God’s Word Is True.

“Here is what I mean by failing to act like Word of God is true,” Apostle Price writes. “You say you believe the Bible.  That means that you are a doer of the Word, and not a hearer only (James 1:25).  If you believe it and then not do it, that looks like you don’t believe it.

“If you say you believe God, that means you believe His Word, because God and His Word are one.  You cannot believe God and not believe the Bible; and you cannot believe the Bible and not believe God. . . .

“If you believe God’s Word, you should then have no hesitation to also do what His Word says to do.  Believing everything God says in His Word about you and your circumstances includes acting on that Word . . . .

In Mark 11:24, Jesus says:

Therefore I say unto you, what things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

He does not say, feel that you receive them; He does not say see that you receive them; He does not say understand that you receive them. He simply says believe it.  If you believe the Bible, you will then act like what it says is true, including what it says in Mark 11:24.

In Chapter 3, Apostle Price warns that Enemy No. 3 is Concentration on Sense Knowledge Evidence, or elevating knowledge that comes through one’s senses above the Word of God.

“Any time you allow your senses to dictate where you are with God, you have already lost the battle,” he writes.

In Chapter 4, Enemy No. 4 is A Lack of Patience. “The only way we get patience is by standing on the Word of God and waiting,” he writes.

Like so many of Apostle Price’s books, this 80-page volume literally drips with revelation, wisdom and just plain common sense.  Three things every Christian needs to be an overcomer.
