Family, friends and fun at Apostle Price’s 85th-year celebration

One could be forgiven for leaving Apostle Frederick K.C. Price’s 85th birthday celebration wondering how their lives might have been enhanced by a dad like the apostle.

But by his own admission, Apostle Price himself did not have the kind of dad that the nearly 400 diners celebrated on Friday, January 5, at the Sheraton Gateway Los Angeles Airport Hotel. His actual birthday was January 3.

Price family members gave humorously glowing tributes to their singular man of God during the black-tie affair designed as a walk down both a memory lane and a comedy lane.

Interspersed between many humorous recollections was an operatic presentation by songstress Gertrude Bradley who sang Vissi d’arte from Pucinni’s “Tosca,” Summertime from the Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess,” and I Know That My Redeemer Liveth from Handel’s “Messiah.”

Pastor Steven Perrilloux Sr. of Riverlands Christian Center in Reserve, La., a former Crenshaw Christian Center member, contributed a fitting song for the occasion entitled, All Things Are Possible.

And Christian comedienne Edwonda White had the celebrants out of control at times with laughter.

There were also four marvelous photo presentations of the apostle and his family, one to the theme music from the movie Shaft, a second to the theme from the James Bond movies, a third to the song Night and Day,and a final one to the song We Are Family.

Second daughter Cheryl Price opened the program expressing mad love for her dad and proclaiming herself to be his favorite daughter. (However, that is something that older sister Angela Evans and younger sister Stephanie Price Buchanan regularly proclaim also.)

Before she prayed over the meal, and the whole room sang Happy Birthday, the apostle’s sister, Dr. Delores Price Jones, thanked her brother and Dr. Betty for not giving up on her and leading her to Jesus.

First daughter Angela Evans reminded the celebrants that she has worked for her dad for “41 years of my life.” She called him the “consummate leader” and a “pastor extraordinaire,” a man who is “disciplined,” her “first hero” and a man “respected on at least six of the seven continents.” (That would apparently leave out Antarctica, which is mostly populated by penguins.)

Angela’s husband, Michael Evans, called him his “favorite father-in-law.” (Of course. He has only one wife.)

“He’s just the kind of guy you want to show your best to,” he said. “You don’t want to disappoint.”  He also described the apostle as “the most generous man I have ever met. You can’t beat Fred Price giving,” he said.

Danon Buchanan, husband to third daughter Stephanie, simply wished his father-in-law happy birthday. (Danon, however, is famous for his quips.)

Stephanie then related two teaching moments learned from her dad when she was a teen. One involved a hair appointment her parents had set up that she changed without their consent. As a consequence, her dad refused to drive her to her new appointment, so she had to take the bus.

“I never changed my appointment again,” she said.

The second teaching moment came after she ran out of gas, a no-no in the Price household. She was shocked when she called home to get someone to pick her up from the shopping center and her dad said no. “This is what you’re going to do,” he told her, and gave her instructions on purchasing a gas can and walking to a nearby service station to get gas to put in the car.

“I’m a girl!” Stephanie protested to herself. Still, she concluded, “He is the absolutely best father I could ever ask for.”

Brother-in-law Baltimore Scott, Dr. Betty’s brother, who has “known Apostle Price for 65 years,” called himself “an eyewitness to history.”

“Let me tell you what I’ve learned from Fred. I saw a person who met challenges and who would not only go through them but grow through them.” He said Apostle Price was not only disciplined, but consistent. “There is no man more disciplined than Fred Price,” he said.

First lady Angel Price, in a fine play on words, thanked her father-in-law for “being the best father-in-love.”

Pastor Frederick told his father, “I love you, Dad. You are my hero.” He also mentioned the physical challenges his dad had faced, and that “he’s conquered every single one of them.”

“There is nobody like this guy,” Pastor Frederick continued. “Everyone likes to say practice what you preach, but my dad preaches what he practices.”

“I believe there is another facet of faith that we haven’t heard yet, and this man is going to teach it to us,” he added.

Next came pastors Michael and DeeDee Freeman of Spirit of Faith Christian Center in Temple Hills, Md.

“Apostle we love you so much,” said Dr. DeeDee. “Thank you for showing us the way, because you showed us how to win these faith fights.” She mentioned how death tried to take her husband, but because of the faith they had learned from Apostle Price, they were able to withstand the attack.

“To be able to say that I am your favorite spiritual son thrills my heart in a way that you cannot imagine. Sir, you are the greatest man in my life,” said Dr. Michael, who reminded the gathering that he had modeled both his ministry and his marriage after the apostle’s ministry and marriage.

“May I say what a wonderful blessing it is to celebrate my wonderful husband of 64 years or more,” Dr. Betty told the gathering. “I have this wonderful Christian husband. He has given me everything in my life that I could have wanted. Thank you for being such a wonderful pastor, such a wonderful husband.”

Lastly, Apostle Price told the celebrants that he “was blessed beyond words” by the celebration. “I let the Father dwell in my life to the best of my ability. I thank God for you and for giving me this party. I’m grateful and I just don’t have words to express it.

“I’m awesomely grateful to the Father. I’m raring to go and I don’t believe I’m at the end yet. I’m excited. I’m looking forward to the next 85 years.”
