Guidelines for Maximized Health, Volume 2
BOOK REVIEW

Last January, we reviewed the book titled Guidelines for Maximized Health: The Power of Faith and Medicine by Dr. Leslie L. Bostick, in which she makes this statement: “The doctor cannot control what happens in a patient’s body, but God can. This in no way diminishes the role of the doctor, but doctors are not healers; only Jesus is.”

She goes on:

“Many believers have the mistaken perception that when a disease or a symptom is present in their bodies, they have a choice between seeing a physician or believing God for their healing. There is no such choice, because the two are not comparable, but complementary.”

Now comes another Bostick book, this time from her husband, Dr. Peter J. Bostick, a surgical oncologist. With the title Guidelines for Maximized Health: Your Healthy Place in God, Volume 2, this book takes off on the title of the first book.

In chapter one, Dr. Peter Bostick wants the reader to grasp two ideas embedded in Third John 1:2, which says:

Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thou soul prospereth.

The verse indicates that it is God’s desire is that we prosper in every way – physically, mentally and spiritually.

“. . . . contrary to what many people think, prosperity is not limited to financial prosperity,” Dr. Bostick writes. “Financial prosperity is just one portion of what is included under the umbrella of prosperity.”

He continues: “After the word prosper comes the words and be in health . . . . “Not only does God want our lives to be prosperous, but He wants us to be in health.”

“Imagine if our lives were prosperous in all the areas, but we did not have health.  It’s probable that we would not be able to travel or effectively minister to others. On the other hand, if we have health, but our personal lives are not prosperous, we would still be limited in impacting the Kingdom of God.”

In chapter 2 – Wealthy Place and Healthy Place in God – he states that “the wealthy place and the healthy place are where God wants us to reside. Once we enter into this wealthy and healthy place, we are to live there permanently while on earth.”

If you are not there, there is still hope.

Dr. Bostick goes on to suggest:

“You may not be in that healthy place right now – and there are millions in the nation who are not – but if you will be responsible, both naturally and spiritually, you can arrive at the desired destination.  My wife and I know people with hypertension and diabetes, for example, who have lived well into their eighties and nineties and have done well because they have been diligent to take care of their bodies.”

In Chapter 3, entitled With Long Life I Will Satisfy You, Dr. Bostick notes that Genesis 6:3 “defines the length of man’s days as a hundred and twenty years” and that Psalm 90:10 seems to indicate that seventy years should be the possible minimum lifespan.  There are very few who reach 120 years, and many who die in their seventies.

“Too often people think of themselves as being old and use terms like ‘I’m over the hill’ or ‘I’m having a senior moment,’ common terms that so-called seniors may use jokingly.” Rather than make such statements, he suggests quoting such passages as Isaiah 40:31, which says:

But they that wait upon on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint.

“Living a long life is a covenant right that we as believers have,” he writes. But he adds: “Believers can’t expect to live long lives while at the same time neglecting the care of their bodies, although some have been successful in doing just that.”

Below are the subjects of other chapters.

Chapter 4: The Commandment to Take Care of My Body.

Chapter 5: Alcohol, Drugs and Poor Diet.

Chapter 6: What’s in the Pantry?

Chapter 7: Fast Foods and Restaurants.

Chapter 8: Developing My Personal Diet.

Chapter 9: The Benefits of Bodily Exercise.

Chapter 10: Physicians Treat, but God Heals.

Chapter 11: What to Do if You Are Dealing with a Specific Disease.

Chapter 12: The Power of the Cross: By Jesus’ Stripes You Are healed.

While there is no known fountain of youth, this book suggests that there are ways to add good healthful years to your life. Guidelines for Maximized Health, Volume 2, by Dr. Peter J. Bostick may help you achieve the longevity you desire.
