Supernatural Wonders: Heavenly Heavyweights

With a general sense of the heavenly map, we now can meet the cast of celestial characters. Scripture does not reveal everything we would like to know, so we need to embrace the element of mystery. Many great thinkers, including Maimonides, Clement of Rome, Ambrose of Milan, Jerome, Dionysius, Thomas Aquinas, and Dante Alighieri have done the same.

We will begin where they did in the Scriptures. Two verses drop some key names, all of them players in the celestial hierarchy:

For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. Colossians 1:16

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12
